On the Importance of Being Positive …

On the Importance of Being Positive …

I am often asked questions about the plausibility of being positive, living day to day … is it actually possible or realistic for anyone to be so positive? … and what difference would it really make? Most people think we have positive days and we have negative days and it just happens to us … like we are puppets and someone is pulling the strings and deciding what kind of a day we will have! We often do not recognize that we have a role in what is unfolding, we are participating in this process much more than we actually understand.

There may be days when we feel the weight of something not-so-pleasant hovering over us … and we always have a choice as to where we go emotionally with these feelings … and who we wish to be. These moments of darkness, resistance and conflict are all part of the discomfort and the beauty of being human. We can get sucked into the downward spiral or we can choose a more positive, empowering feeling. If we are conscious enough at that time to recognize that we are not a victim, we have a brief choice point – a moment in time when we are on the edge of this vortex – to choose to step back and decide falling into this angry or sad emotion does not serve us. In this crucial moment, shifting to a more positive thought or feeling will pull us from the edge of this precipice.

Being positive is such a powerful tool! It gives us access to the infinite possibilities present in different perspectives and gives us greater resilience in these difficult moments. We may be able to understand that this situation we had defined as ‘terrible’ offers us some opportunity to see ourselves clearly or we may even have the lucidity to recognize the gift in this experience. Being positive enforces our immune systems and stimulates our creativity. Beyond this, it helps remind us that we are magnificent beings and that feeling good about ourselves, feeling our light and feeling our connection to the all are most important for creating the lives and world we desire. So it is in our best interest to find a way to extricate ourselves as quickly as we can from the onslaught of negative feelings and shift into a more positive place in general and about the issue at hand.

Unconditional love is our magic wand. Sending love to a bad situation diffuses its ugliness and removes us from the mire. Sending love to a person unlocks their resistance, for beneath all behavior is nothing but the need to feel loved. Sending love releases the hold our egos have on us and allows us to see everything more clearly. It all starts with loving ourselves and recognizing our magnificent uniqueness. So, how can we do this when we are caught up in sadness, hatred and rage? Breathe … and remember that no amount of hatred, sadness or anger will do anything but add more hatred, sadness and anger to the situation. The fastest way out of the heaviness is to breathe deeply and send loving feelings. This is the most positive thing we can do any time, any place and in any situation.
